Solomon asks God for wisdom

Royal wisdom traditions trained rulers to administer justice, manage courts, and maintain order. Solomon’s request is notable because he seeks discernment for service rather than wealth, long life, or victory over enemies.

The request makes wise judgment a gift for faithful leadership. Solomon receives wisdom, but the later royal narrative also shows that knowledge without covenant loyalty cannot secure the kingdom.
