Josiah renews the covenant

The book of the law is found during Temple repairs, and King Josiah leads Judah in a sweeping renewal of covenant worship.

Historical context

Josiah ruled during a period of shifting imperial power after Assyria’s decline. Temple restoration, centralization of worship, removal of local shrines, and public reading of a discovered scroll reshaped Judah’s religious and political life.

Biblical significance

The reform shows the power of hearing and obeying the covenant word, while the narrative still acknowledges the depth of Judah’s accumulated guilt. Josiah’s response becomes a model of humility, repentance, and reform in the face of judgment.
