Jesus’ ministryc. AD 27–29

Jesus is tempted in the wilderness

The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness, where he resists the tempter and remains faithful to God’s word.

Historical context

The wilderness evokes Israel’s testing after the Exodus and the prophetic tradition of dependence on God. Jesus’ forty days also connect his mission to biblical patterns of fasting, trial, and preparation for public ministry.

Biblical significance

Jesus refuses to use power for spectacle, self-provision, or political domination. His faithfulness establishes the character of his kingdom and presents him as the obedient Son who succeeds where Israel failed.
