Templejudgmentprayer

Historical context

The Jerusalem Temple was the center of Jewish pilgrimage, sacrifice, priestly service, and economic exchange. Jesus’ action takes place during Passover, when the city was crowded and Roman authorities were especially alert to public unrest.

Biblical significance

The prophetic sign confronts corrupt worship and announces judgment on a system that has failed to embody prayer for the nations. It also intensifies the conflict that leads religious leaders to seek Jesus’ death.
