Jesus’ ministry•c. AD 28–30
Jesus calls Matthew
Jesus calls Matthew from the tax booth, and a meal with tax collectors becomes a sign of his mission to sinners.

Historical context
Tax collectors worked within a system that could be associated with Roman extraction, local profit, and social exclusion. Shared meals communicated acceptance and status, so Jesus’ table fellowship provoked religious and social questions.
Biblical significance
Jesus declares that he came to call sinners and uses mercy, not separation from the broken, to describe his mission. Matthew’s response also shows discipleship as a concrete decision to leave one identity and follow Jesus.
