Joshua renews the covenant at Shechem

Shechem stood in the central hill country near important routes and carried memories from the patriarchal narratives. Public covenant ceremonies used historical recitation, declarations of loyalty, and witnesses to shape a people’s identity.

Joshua places Israel’s choice within the prior story of God’s grace, from Abraham through the Exodus and conquest. The call to choose whom to serve becomes one of Scripture’s clearest statements that covenant faithfulness must shape household and national life.
